Zoom interview with Dougal Dixon tomorrow

I received, courtesy of Dougal Dixon, an invitation from Oscar Salguero, a book curator from New York, to view a Zoom presentation given tomorrow by Dougal. Mr Salguero assured me anyone can register for free. Because time is short I will just pass on the information.

"Mr. Dixon will give a live presentation highlighting some of his most important works on speculative zoology from the last 40 years. This will be presented via zoom and it's sponsored by the Center for Book Arts in NY."

 Friday, April 30, from 1 - 2:30pm EST

That should make 19:00 -21:30 hrs CET, and 18:00-20:30 hrs for people in the UK

Here is the event (click on "Register" button to receive the zoom link):

 After the event

This is just a short update for those who are curious about Dougal’s work.

In the talk, Dougal mentioned that there would be a 40-year anniversary edition of ‘After Man’, that should be published before the end of 2021. I understood that it will have more material than the books published so far, including sketches.

Another interesting bit of information was that there were Japanese model kits of some of the creatures featuring in ‘After Man’. Dougal showed a box with content of an unassembled kit of the Night Stalker. I was curious and wondered if I could find out more about those kits (secretly hoping I might still order one from some forgotten Japanese warehouse).

Well, I found two entries on a site of a company where you can indeed order such things, but the items were sold out. There were a few images, and I chose the one above, because it showed the contents of the box.

The two images above are were posted by a collector on a site called ‘dinotoyblog’. Interesting, aren't they? Alas, I found no hidden stores of such models...

My pleasure! It was interesting to hear that there will be a special '40 year edition' of 'After Man'. I have the original UK one, a slightly later Dutch one, and the one form one or two years ago. This new edition promises to have sketches in it, so I guess I will end up owning four versions of 'After Man'.

I'll be my 5th version of 'After Man'.

excellence - more _After Man_ books to enjoy.

ALSO, is there a Furaha version of lutrinization(sp), in which organisms come to resemble otters - or does the breathing system on Furaha verts prevent it? https://nixillustration.com/science-illustration/2021/perplexisaurus/

thank you!

Sorry for the delay, I am preparing to move, and that takes time.

Anthony: Well, otters, otters... There certainly are terrestrial hexapods that adapted to life in water again, including amphibious stages. The only one I have painted so far is amphibious, and uses two legs as flippers/fins, while the others are streamlined and weak, but still allow the animal to walk. So it is not like an otter in the sense that it swims by vertical undulations of the body plus hind legs.

anthony: haha! I have thought of making paper models of some Furahan animals for users to print, cut, fold and glue. But they would not be cuddly. I see the point though (I own a cuddly ichthyosaur...).

no problem about - wait, what delay? it was less than a week. regardless, all the best in the move and in the new home!

may not be completely otter-ish, but still sounds adorable.

True, but I meant a post with more original substance.

The 'wetsloth' (Tardabarba succulenta) is not really cuddly, but does look a bit comical. It spends its life trying to munch its way through the supply of purpleweed. This results in oscillations in the number of wetsloths and purpleweed, so you can a Weed Glut or a Sloth Plague.

Feel bad that I missed it. I would have been curios to know if he had any new projects coming up or, if he had the opportunity, how he would revise any of his speculative biology books if at all given how much we've learned since their publication.

Sheather888: If I ever find the time do model anything in 3D, including paper models, I will spend that limited time on my own creations. That;'s not to say theta other works are not good, but it is a simple priority matter.

This just makes me think of the Walking With Dinosaurs arena spectacular for some reason. Imagine if After Man got a similar treatment...
